In his academic career, Dr. Chiriva Internati made significant contributions to cancer research and immunotherapy. He served as an Associate Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center from 2013 to 2017, where he focused on tumor immunology and education. In 2019, he joined the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as an Associate Professor. During this period, his research led to the identification of novel cancer-testis antigens—unique proteins that became targets for cancer immunotherapy. He spearheaded the development of a bioinformatics platform called Diamond CancerSplice that uses artificial intelligence to discover and prioritize new targets for cancer treatment. These achievements highlight Dr. Chiriva Internati’s role in pushing the boundaries of cancer research and showcasing how cutting-edge technology can intersect with biology to save lives.

Beyond academia, Dr. Chiriva Internati is also a visionary entrepreneur. He founded Kiromic Biopharma, Inc. in 2006 (and later co-founded Kiromic, Inc. in 2013) to bring revolutionary immunotherapy treatments from the lab to the clinic. As the CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of these biotech ventures, he led teams in developing next-generation cancer therapies, integrating his research insights into real-world solutions. Under his leadership, Kiromic developed the Diamond AI platform – an advanced system for drug discovery – exemplifying how Dr. Chiriva Internati bridges scientific innovation with practical application. His dual roles as a scientist and CEO demonstrate exceptional leadership in STEM, as he successfully navigated the challenges of scientific research, clinical development, and business management. Through these endeavors, he has not only contributed new knowledge and treatments in biotechnology but also fostered a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Throughout his career, Maurizio Chiriva Internati has remained passionate about mentoring and supporting budding scientists. He has published numerous scientific papers and earned over 4,600 citations in the research community, reflecting the impact of his work in immunology and cancer therapy. Recognizing the importance of education in his own success, Dr. Chiriva Internati is deeply motivated to give back to the academic community. This personal drive led him to establish the Maurizio Chiriva Internati STEM Scholarship. By founding this scholarship, he extends his legacy beyond his laboratory and companies, directly investing in students who will become tomorrow’s innovators. He often emphasizes that his own achievements were made possible by educational opportunities and mentors who guided him, and he wants to ensure that current students receive similar support. Dr. Chiriva Internati’s comprehensive story — from a curious student in Italy to a groundbreaking scientist and biotech leader — is a testament to the power of perseverance, education, and the relentless pursuit of discovery. It is this journey and ethos that he now shares with young scholars through his scholarship, hoping to inspire them to push the frontiers of STEM just as he has.
